To reduce costs and get business-critical data to the workforce more
quickly, organizations are finding it more expedient to use business
experts in the design and delivery of training. Now, more than ever,
it is imperative that these subject matter experts understand how effective
workplace training is constructed and carried out. But don’t just
take our word for it….
Thanks so much for the Design class. I can’t
adequately tell you how much I learned and how useful it will be.
Being brand new and very skeptical about synchronous learning (not
to mention design), you have completely turned me around.

This is a great class that I would recommend
to more than just SME’s.

The intersession work was great to reinforce
the concepts covered in that week’s session. It was also important
to review the results at the start of each class the next week. The
intersession work also helped me in starting to complete my final
project because it forced me to start to look at how I was really
going to set up this potential training session and why.

A common occurrence when using business / subject matter experts to
design training is that they get buried in the detail and focus on delivering
data instead of facilitating knowledge transfer. By applying a few basic,
but critical, instructional design principles, they can focus on the
essential outcomes that are necessary and practical for the organization
The sheer amount of knowledge that needs to be transferred, short development
cycles, small audience sizes, and minimal program shelf life all validate
the need for knowledge about instructional design skills throughout
the organization.
From a SME prospective or someone
with little to no training experience I think your approach is clear,
simple, and provides an excellent context for designing solid training.
I wish that when I was first learning I would have had this program
available to me as my instructional design foundation.
I have taken several on-line programs and I believe that this
program is in a league of its own. You do an excellent job of making
this on-line experience truly feel like an instructor led one.
This course was a very valuable experience that I will
continue to use well into the future.

Certificate Overview
The instructional design certificate provides 10 hours of live online
training blended with self directed exercises and assignments and a
final project. At the conclusion of this certificate series, the participant
will be able to quickly create well-designed training programs that
effectively transfer expertise to the workforce.
The course is limited to 8 individuals. All sessions are held via a
synchronous delivery platform (i.e. Elluminate, WebEx, Centra, etc.*)
allowing an individual to attend from anywhere he/she has an internet
connection. All sessions are 2.5 hours; the certificate includes:
Delivered by the Instructional Design experts of The
Training Doctor, LLC.
Introduction to the ISD Process
This session introduces the role of the instructional design process,
briefly discussing each step of the ADDIE model and its importance in
the development of sound training. In addition to an overview of each
of the modules, this session also orients the attendee to the online
learning environment.
This program introduces the ISD process that can
be applied to any learning environment: Traditional Classroom, Online,
Self Directed, etc.
At the end of this session, participants will
be able to:
- Be a successful participant in the online learning
environment
- Explain the ADDIE model of instructional design
Conducting the Needs
Analysis/Setting Objectives
Understanding the underlying need for training is a pre-requisite for
setting objectives. The needs analysis identifies whether or not there
is a true training need, what the extent of the need is, and what the
present knowledge and skill level of the trainee-group is. The first
half of this session will assist participants in:
- Identifying and separating symptoms from problems
- Isolating outside influences and contributors
to the problem
- Determining the most effective and efficient
method of remedying the problem (which may NOT be a training solution)
This session will conclude by discussing
objectives, which are one of the most crucial aspects of training. They
are the blueprint to follow when designing training courses. Attendees
will learn to:
- Define the learning that needs to occur and
the type of training necessary to get people there (skills or knowledge)
- Identify the level of training involved (familiarity
or mastery)
- Identify any criteria or conditions that need
to be incorporated into the training
Design of the Training
and Development of Training Materials
No learning will take place if your training isn’t
designed for the right audience or created according to sound instructional
principles. At the conclusion of this session, participants will be
able to:
- Identify knowledge and skills items
- Design training via logical “chunking”
of topics and the hierarchies of learning (known to unknown; simple
to complex)
- Identify appropriate training methodologies
(classroom, self-study, job aids, tutorials, e-learning, etc) given
the topic, the audience, and the learning objectives.
Evaluations
Evaluations are used to determine if your training
has worked, what level of mastery the trainees have attained, and whether
the training was worth the time and investment for the organization.
Evaluations are also used to make good training better and to get bad
training out of the curriculum.
At the end of this session, participants will
be able to:
- Define Evaluation Levels 1 - 5 and their importance
in evaluating curriculum
- Identify the best method for evaluating various
types of training programs and learner performance
- Discuss the role of the pilot and ongoing evaluation
of training programs
Final Assignment
The final assignment includes two deliverables:
- A complete training program – from all
perspectives – including instructor materials, participant materials
and/or any supporting materials necessary (slides, videos, job aids,
etc).
- A 3-5 page written paper discussing what the
participant learned through the ISD for the SME course and how their
training design was influenced by this learning.
The final assignments are due 4 weeks after the
final, live session (weekly assignments will assist you in achieving
the first deliverable).

Course Materials and Requirements
Pre-work is not required.
A 43 page Participant Workbook will be distributed
via email to all participants approximately 3 – 5 days before
the first class. The workbook includes instructions for a tech-check
which is required of all participants to ensure that they are able to
successfully log-in to the online classroom (forestalling firewall and
security issues at individual’s locations).
Participants will receive two e-books:
- Designing Training Manuals
- ISD for the SME
at the end of the sessions in which these two
publications are appropriately linked.
I was thrilled with the fact that
trainers with decades of experience were learning some of the same
techniques as I, with only a few years under my belt. I really enjoyed
this opportunity and learning experience.
I must admit, it was easy to use and understand. I
would recommend this course for other trainers.
